Offer: Predoctoral FPI grant

PhD Student

Project title: “Development of a PREclinical model linked to a focused chemical library for cognitive DefICiT in schizophrenia (PREDICT)”.

Supervisors of the Doctorate Thesis de la tesis doctoral: Prof María Isabel Loza García and Prof José Manuel Brea Floriani.
Research Centre: The doctorate tesis (FPI grant) will be executed at the Innopharma research group located in CiMUS Research Centre and associated to the Department of Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Technological Pharmacy of the University of Santiago de Compostela.

Project description: Its major aim is to discover more efficient drugs for treating schizophrenia, with a special focus on cognitive deficit, the disease symptoms with less pharmacological approaches, but one of the more relevant symptoms for ameliorating the quality of life of people suffering schizophrenia. Thus, the project intends to develop novel in vitro studies allowing increase a better prediction of clinical/translational in the disease.

Requirements:
- Having obtained an official Degree or equivalent when applying to the call and possessing all the requirements necessary to access to Doctorate studies once the grant is awarded.
- Knowledge of written and spoken English.
- Previous experience in pharmacological research in drug discovery will be positively evaluated.

Research group description:
BioFarma research group from the University of Santiago de Compostela has a proven track record in applied research to early drug discovery in collaboration with biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries. BioFarma research group is involved in a collaborative public-private environment in drug discovery.
Its drug screening and pharmacogenomics Innopharma platform is one of the High-Capacity Screening Centers for ERIC EU-OPENSCREEN (European Infrastructure of Open Screening Platforms for Chemical Biology; www.eu-openscreen.eu). It has been collaborating with pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies in more than 150 projects and contracts funded by either private or public bodies. BioFarma/Innopharma has been involved in early drug discovery programs of 17 new chemical entities that entered clinical trials.
The human group of professionals has a wide experience in the different aspects of drug discovery (assay development and miniaturization, design and execution of screening cascades, HTS, safety in vitro panels, ADME, etc.). It is an international multidisciplinary team with experts in constant adaptation to new technologies, which affords great robustness in the results obtained and serves as a learning hub for the training of researchers on the field.
