Thyroid hormone in heart and mind

Prof. Jens Mittag

About

Thyroid hormone has profound effects on thermoregulation, heart rate and energy expenditure, usually by a combination of synergistic actions in the respective peripheral organ and the central nervous system. However, the precise mechanisms are not clear. Our data provide a better understanding of how thyroid hormone acts in different neuroanatomical areas of the brain to control peripheral homeostasis.

Bio

Jens Mittag is Director of the Institute for Experimental Endocrinology at the University of Lübeck (Germany) and, a coordinator of the research consortium on local control of thyroid hormone action funded by the German Research Council. He works on the role of thyroid hormone in the control of heart rate, body temperature and metabolism, aiming to dissect the peripheral from the central actions.
