Pablo Aguiar
My scientific career has been focused on the development, implementation and validation of new acquisition strategies, processing methods and modelling of PET, SPECT, CT and MRI imaging studies, aimed at providing new imaging biomarkers for early diagnosis and follow-up of human diseases. My PhD project at the Hospital Clínic - Universitat de Barcelona (2008) was centred on the implementation of tomographic reconstruction methods for enhancing the quality and accuracy of PET images. After my PhD, my research career has taken place in both universities and hospitals, in Spain (IFIC-UV, Valencia), UK (Imperial College, London) and France (CNRS, Strasbourg). In particular, my research line received a major boost after my work at CNRS-Strasbourg (2014-2015), expanding my scientific knowledge in translational molecular imaging (microPET and microSPECT).
In 2016, I got Ramón y Cajal fellow MINECO, ranked 1st at the national call, to establish my research line at the University of Santiago de Compostela and, fortunately, the funding received in the last 5 years (3 National projects and 2 EU projects) allowed me to consolidate my research line in molecular imaging biomarkers. My scientific achievements can be summarized in 72 articles in JCR journals (Q1: 39/72 and Q1+Q2: 62/72) mostly as main author (70%). I registered 4 software packages, 1 patent application and I signed a transfer agreement. Furthermore, I founded Qubiotech S.L., a spin-off company generating six full-time employees and being able to place three innovative products on the market, which are currently used by more than 20 hospitals in Spain, Portugal, UK and Germany.
Recently, I have been awarded the Rotblat Medal by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), which is the UK professional body and learned society for physicists, engineers and technologists within the field of medicine.
