09:30 - 10:30 h. Genetics of Research Mice: from Fiction to Facts
Inbred mice have historically been essential models for scientific research and will continue to be so. Indeed, genetic standardisation plays a key role in reducing variances within study populations, it facilitates both the monitoring of therapeutic efficacy and reduces differences between studies in order to maximize reproducibility of results. However, recent studies have revealed that a high proportion of inbred mouse lines are genetically heterogenous populations. Genotyping inconsistencies, wrong colony management practices and lack of genetic testing controls all lead to poor mouse model genetic standardisation. This presentation will review how genetic background heterogeneity may arise within a colony, and what molecular testing approaches such as polymorphic markers analysis (SNPs and STRs), really tell us about mouse genetics.
10:30- 11:30 h. What's in a Name? Understanding the Basics and Research Value of Mouse Nomenclature
Mouse nomenclature can be used to determine a strain’s genetic background, genetic modifications, who generated it, and who currently distributes it. Understanding mouse nomenclature also enables you to select optimal mouse models and control strains for your research, and generates the most reliable and reproducible data.
