'Development of vaccines against prevalent human diseases'

According to World Health Organization (WHO), vaccines are the most efficient approach to control human diseases and to safe millions of lives worldwide. His laboratory has been engaged in the development of vaccines for diseases that cause high mortality rates after virus infection. In this presentation, he will present candidate vaccines and studies from the bench to the clinic for HIV/AIDS, chikungunya and Ebola.

About

Mariano Esteban is Professor Ad honorem of CSIC, President of the Spanish Institute (Spanish Royal Society) and of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy. He obtained his PhD in Microbiology from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1970, and stay for 22 years abroad in different institutions: National Institute for Medical Research (MRC) in London and Rutgers Medical School, Gent Molecular Biology and Downstate Medical Center in New York, where he became full Professor. Returning to Spain as Director of the National Center of Biotechnology, he has done pioneering work on the mode of action of interferons, molecular biology of poxvirus, immune system modulation and vaccine development. He has published 340 papers, 10 patents, 31 theses and obtained numerous grants.
