About
Electron beams, traditionally used for superficial tumors, are now considered for deep-seated cancers through Very High Energy Electrons. VHEE provide precise dose distributions and can be delivered at ultra-high dose rates to trigger the newly discovered FLASH effect. The advances in technology, from compact accelerators to new treatment planning, will be reviewed together with their clinical perspectives
Bio
Dr Patera is a Full Professor in Physics and Director of the Specialty School of Medical Physics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He is the coordinator of the Applied Radiation Physics Group of Sapienza University, whose focus of research activity is nuclear physics applications to Medicine, in particular to Particle Therapy and radioprotection in Space. Recently, his main research interest is the development of a Very high-energy Electron Accelerator for FLASH radiotherapy.
