G-NIGHT - The Galician night. European night of researchers. Santiago de Compostela
26 September 2025 18:00–21:00
Claustro do Colexio de Fonseca, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela.
The European Researchers' Night is a scientific dissemination event held simultaneously in cities all over Europe on the last Friday in September. Researchers are the protagonists, showing the diversity of science and technology and their impact on the lives of citizens. This initiative is organized within the H2020 framework programme through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).
For the fifth year in a row, CiMUS will participate in this day, taking place in Santiago de Compostela, with scientific workshops for all audiences:
- "Playing in the kitchen with colors" (Molecular Oncology Laboratory, DNA Repair & Genome Integrity Groups)
Using ingredients found in any kitchen, we will extract DNA from strawberries together with you.
With “colored” bacterial cultures, we’ll see how manipulating the genome allows us to modify some characteristics of living beings. Small changes in the “code” can change their color. - "DNA, chromosomes, and cell division" (DNA Repair & Genome Integrity Group)
In this workshop, we will explore the mechanisms of eukaryotic cell division using basic microscopy techniques and 3D augmented reality models. Thanks to these techniques, we’ll be able to understand one of the most important processes of life, making it accessible to all audiences. - "Colorful nanoscience: a practice to see the invisible" (Nanomedicine and Drug Delivery Group)
we will observe the formation of colorful microcapsules from sodium alginate and calcium chloride using the method known as ionotropic gelation. The use of spherification is widespread in the food industry and in medicine; in the latter field, it is also used for drug encapsulation.
The University of Santiago de Compostela is one of the organizing bodies.
