The CIMULI Project

 

Ovarian cancer (OC) was the seventh most common cancer in women in 2018. Although there have been advances in chemotherapy protocols, there are a considerable number of patients who develop resistance to cisplatin, making it necessary the search for new therapeutic options. Our group focuses its effort on studying the role of IL6 and the IL6 receptor as potential targets in a combined immunotherapy using IL6/IL6R mAb and NK cell transfer.

2015-2016: Master's degree in Neuroscience (Universidade Santiago de Compostela).
2016-2022: PhD student in Molecular Medicine at the Cell Signalling and Stress Group in CiMUS led by Juan Zalvide and Celia Pombo.
2022-2024: Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine (Queen's University of Belfast).
2024-present: Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CiMUS, in the Cell Cycle and Oncology Group.

Ag5: A novel quantum cluster therapy targeting mitochondria and antioxidant systems in glioblastoma

 

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive grade 4 brain tumour with high relapse rates and a median survival of only 12–16 months. Despite intensive research, effective treatment options remain limited. Ag5, a novel compound developed by Arjuna Therapeutics, shows promise by crossing the blood-brain barrier and inducing cancer cell death through mitochondrial disruption and ROS elevation. We aim to evaluate Ag5's efficacy in patient-derived GBM models, advancing a precision medicine approach for this challenging disease.

CV highlights:

I’m a Marie Skłodowska-Curie doctoral fellow at KU Leuven (Belgium), based in the Laboratory for Precision Cancer Medicine. My research focuses on glioblastoma, where I investigate tumour heterogeneity and treatment resistance using patient-derived models, aiming to develop personalised therapeutic strategies. I completed my Master's in Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur, India, where I used single-cell omics approaches to study metabolic disorders. He is currently carrying out a research stay at the Oncological Research Group (P1L1), CiMUS.
