A multidisciplinary journey of roadblocks and (small) advancements toward the development of safe and effective local treatments for glioblastoma

About
The development of effective local treatments for glioblastoma is a complex and multidisciplinary challenge. It requires a deep understanding of the tumor microenvironment, the mechanisms driving recurrence, and the strategic selection of therapeutic agents and delivery systems. In this seminar, Chiara Bastiancich will share her research journey in designing lipid nanocapsule-based hydrogels aimed at delaying - though not fully preventing - tumor recurrence. She will also present insights gained from preclinical resection models, which have helped identify critical post-surgical time windows and cellular targets. These findings pave the way for optimized combinatory treatments that can further prolong recurrence-free survival.
Bio
Chiara Bastiancich is a Principal Investigator in the Gliomagenesis and Microenvironment group at the Institute of NeuroPhysiopathology (INP - UMR7051) in Marseille, France. She obtained a double PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from UCLouvain and the University of Angers (Erasmus Mundus NanoFar) in 2018, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at INP and an Assistant Professorship in Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Turin in 2022. Since 2024, she has been a tenured CNRS researcher at INP, where she focuses on developing drug-loaded delivery systems for the treatment of malignant brain tumors. Her research bridges pharmaceutical technology and brain tumor physiopathology, with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration and translational applications. Committed to supporting the next generation of scientists, Chiara is actively involved in the Controlled Release Society’s initiatives for early-career researchers, both in the Young Scientists Committee and in the BeNeLux & France Local Chapter.
