CiMUS Lecture

Sterol metabolism at the crossroads of obesity and immunometabolism

About

Lipids and sterols accumulate in the liver contributing to fatty liver disease development. Some sterols can activate different transcriptional genetic programs in hepatocytes and macrophages, altering their metabolic and inflammatory functions. My research aims to identify immunometabolic functions of sterols in liver macrophages and hepatocytes and their contribution to MAFLD progression.

Bio

PhD in Molecular Biology (2018) with Mariluz Martínez-Chantar at the University of the Basque Country, studying microRNAs and methionine metabolism in liver disease. Postdoc at Yale with Carlos Fernández-Hernando to study cell-specific functions of miR-33 in mitochondrial function and obesity. Currently holding a young faculty position at Yale, to study the role of sterols in metabolism and immune cells function in MAFLD.
