About
Mitochondria are known to establish contacts with a specialized domain of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), called mitohcondria-associated membranes or MAM. Our data indicates that this these contact sites regulate substrate specificity and lipid dynamics in mitochondria. This novel finding has important implications for understanding the causes of mitochondrial dysfunction in the context of disease.
Bio
The main goal of Estela's laboratory, the role of mitochondria-associated ER membranes (MAM) in cellular homeostasis, is to understand the origin and relevance of mitochondrial and lipid alterations, which are present in the early stages of most, if not all, neurodegenerative diseases; and what strategies can be addressed to restore cellular metabolism and bioenergetic alterations in the context of pathologies, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Alzheimer's.
