Islet HLA-I expression and its relevance for type 1 diabetes

About
HLA-I hyperexpression is considered a hallmark of type 1 diabetes. In this talk, I will present the first quantitative and systematic analysis workflow aim at deciphering islet HLA-I expression in the pancreas of 47 donors with and without type 1 diabetes. I will show quantitative whole-slide results from more than 6000 islets at all disease stages with the aim to advance our understanding of HLA-I as a hallmark of T1D and its potential impact on antigen presentation and autoimmunity.
Bio
Dr. Rodriguez-Calvo is a group leader at the Institute of Diabetes Research (Helmholtz Munich) in Munich, Germany. She studied Veterinary Medicine, and completed her PhD in Veterinary Science at the Research Center for Animal Health (CISA) in Madrid, Spain. In 2012 she joined La Jolla Institute for Immunology (LJI), in San Diego, USA, as a postdoc under the supervision of Professor Matthias von Herrath. In 2015, she received the nPOD Young Investigator Award “for outstanding contributions to diabetes research”. In 2017, she joined the Institute of Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Munich, and started her own laboratory to continue her research focusing on the immunopathology of human type 1 diabetes. In collaboration with the Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes (nPOD), she investigates key mechanisms of viral infection and the immune response against enteroviruses. Dr. Rodriguez-Calvo is also interested in understanding how the immune system interacts with and recognizes beta cells. In 2020 she received the JDRF Robert Goldstein Award for her work in understanding the development of type 1 diabetes.
