Manuel Campos Toimil

Full Professor of Pharmacology at Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) and Principal Investigator at the Research Group on Physiology and Pharmacology of Chronic Diseases (FIFAEC). He is also a Principal Investigator in the Translational Research Group on Neurodegenerative Diseases at Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela (IDIS) and, since 2021, a core member of the Cardiovascular Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

His research focuses on cardiovascular and neurovascular pharmacology, endothelial dysfunction, intracellular signaling, and the role of vascular damage and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in chronic and neurodegenerative diseases. His work combines advanced live-cell imaging, molecular biology, in vitro models of blood-brain barrier (BBB), including  BBB-on-a-chip, and translational approaches aimed at identifying new therapeutic strategies targeting vascular and neurovascular dysfunction.

After obtaining his PhD in Pharmacology in 1995, he conducted postdoctoral research at Université Louis Pasteur (France) and later worked as Research Associate at the University of Cambridge (UK), where he developed innovative live-cell imaging methodologies. Since joining USC, he has established an imaging and electrophysiology platform and promoted multidisciplinary collaborations with clinical and international research groups in Europe and South America.

His current research particularly addresses the contribution of endothelial and neurovascular dysfunction to chronic and neurodegenerative disorders, with special interest in BBB damage as a potential therapeutic target. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, with over 2,800 citations in Google Scholar (h-index: 29), and has been awarded five consecutive six-year research periods.
