CiMUS, recognized as a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence

The Singular Research Center in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CiMUS) of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) has just achieved recognition from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities as a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence, according to a provisional resolution that allocates €75.7 million to recognize and fund nine centers and eight units of excellence that "stand out for their scientific impact and international leadership," as stated by the Ministry.

With this distinction, CiMUS joins the Galician Institute of High Energy Physics (IGFAE), which renewed this recognition in the 2023 call, after becoming the first Galician institute to receive it in 2017. The María de Maeztu Unit seal entails funding of 3 million € over four years. According to the ministerial resolution, the program "aims to strengthen organization, strategic research planning, and the promotion of best practices in research management." It also seeks to "increase the visibility of centers and units of excellence, promote internationalization, and attract and retain new research talent."

In addition to this new distinction, CiMUS holds the CIGUS recognition from the Xunta de Galicia (ED431G/2023/02), which certifies the quality and impact of its research. It is funded by the Regional Ministry of Education, Science, Universities and Vocational Training and co-financed by the European Union.

Since its inception, CiMUS’s mission has been to conduct high-quality research on chronic diseases, with a focus on translation and transfer, so that patients can efficiently receive therapeutic solutions.
