The OC Foundation will help to finance a CiMUS project at the University of Santiago against brain tumours.

  • The OC Against Cancer Foundation and the University of Santiago de Compostela have signed a collaboration agreement under which the foundation will support fundraising for the university's research project on nano-radiopharmaceuticals against brain tumours.

The OC Against Cancer Foundation has signed an agreement with the University of Santiago de Compostela to fund the research project on nano radiopharmaceuticals against glioblastoma that is being developed at the Centre for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CiMUS) of the USC. This agreement broadens the scope of action of the OC Foundation in its fight to save the lives of people suffering from cancer.

Glioblastoma is a type of brain tumour that can manifest itself at any age, but mostly occurs in adults between 45 and 70 years of age, and currently has no cure. The USC CiMUS study, led by María José Alonso and Pablo Aguiar, focuses on the use of nanotechnology for the treatment of this disease, delivering radiopharmaceuticals to the glioblastoma by means of an intravenous injection.

This study is part of the project ‘Early molecular nanoDIAGnostics of Brain tumors using ImmunePET (DIAGBI)’ of the call for R+D+i projects in strategic lines in public-private collaboration of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, but at the same time requires public participation to raise funds from private donations. The University collects these contributions through the platform of the OC Against Cancer Foundation, which, among other events, also organises charity races to raise funds and fight against this disease.

‘The signing of this agreement is a step forward in the OC Foundation's objectives, as it allows us to broaden our scope of action and bring the necessary help to people suffering from a type of cancer for which there are very few lines of research,’ says Valérie Joly, president and founder of the OC Foundation. ‘Agreements like this encourage us to continue our efforts to raise awareness in society of the importance of investing in research into this disease.

Win the race against cancer

The OC Foundation organises charity races to raise the funds needed to finance the fight against cancer. To date, the foundation has raised more than €160,000 from private donations.

The first edition of the ‘Niños sin cáncer’ race took place in Valdemorillo in September 2023. The second edition, called ‘Niños sin cáncer City’, will be held on 19 May at 10:00 am in the Juan Carlos I park in Madrid.

It is not a race exclusively for runners, but also includes Nordic walking, rollerblading, cycling, etc. In this race, the winner is not the best runner, but the one who raises the most money. Participants only have to register on the website of the OC Foundation: https://bit.ly/3vPESW6, create a collection and extend it to all their friends and family. There is also a zero row and donate without running.

About the OC Foundation

The OC Foundation, Oscar Contigo, was founded in 2023 by Valérie Joly and Martín Segado in memory of their son Oscar, who died at the age of 9 from medulloblastoma. Since its creation, the foundation has carried out numerous projects and activities with the aim of raising funds to promote research against childhood cancer and to offer innovative treatments to children suffering from this disease. The flagship of the foundation is the Phase 1-2 trial: Metabolic therapy on relapsed tumours in the Children's Oncology Unit of HM Montepríncipe.
