Olalla Maroñas Amigo
Dr Olalla Maroñas Amigo is a senior researcher at the Fundación Pública Galega de Medicina Xenómica, a member of IDIS, and works at CIMUS, University of Santiago de Compostela. She specialises in clinical pharmacogenetics, pharmacogenomics and personalised medicine, with a strong translational focus on improving drug safety and therapeutic efficacy within the National Health System. In 2023, she was selected as an emerging researcher to lead her own group at IDIS.
Her research centres on identifying biomarkers to prevent adverse drug reactions and optimise treatment outcomes, particularly in complex and high-impact conditions. Her work prioritises psychiatric treatments—including opioid use and addiction—as well as cardiovascular and oncological therapies, applying innovative pharmacogenomic approaches to develop scalable precision medicine strategies with measurable clinical impact.
Dr Maroñas Amigo leads several competitive projects as Principal Investigator, including PI25/01349 (2025–2028), aimed at improving clinical care quality and translational research in pharmacogenetics; PI22/01166 (2022–2025), focused on developing a personalised methadone treatment protocol based on pharmacogenetic profiles; and BioFRAM (PMP22/00056; 2022–2025), which evaluates the implementation of pharmacogenetics in the National Health System for mental and cardiovascular health. She also co-coordinates the Galician Pharmacogenetics Implementation Plan in Psychiatry (2021–2026), recognised with the 2023 Clinical Innovation Award in Psychiatry. In addition, she contributes as a collaborating investigator to major national initiatives such as IMPaCT-Genómica and IMPaCT-Genómica2, advancing precision medicine in rare diseases and cancer.
Her work is supported by strong national and international collaborations with hospitals and research centres, and she has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed publications, mostly in high-impact journals, as well as numerous conference presentations and book chapters. She is actively involved in knowledge transfer and standardisation, coordinating the National Pharmacogenetics Proficiency Testing Programme since 2020 and serving as an EMQN quality assessment provider since 2025. She also contributes to regulatory efforts through the Spanish Society of Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics.
Dr Maroñas Amigo maintains a strong commitment to training, dissemination and international collaboration, participating in educational programmes and scientific forums. She is involved in international consortia influencing European clinical guidelines and is a member of the Pharmacogenomics Mirror Group of the European “1+ Million Genomes” initiative.
Overall, her profile reflects a rapidly consolidating research leader in clinical pharmacogenomics, with a strong translational orientation, extensive collaborative networks, and a clear focus on implementing precision medicine in healthcare systems.
