Degree in Medicine from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He obtained his PhD cum Laude in 1986 from the same University.
He has carried out pre- and post-doctoral research stays at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (Lisbon, Portugal), at the Istituto di Clinica Ostetrica e Ginecologica, University of Modena (Italy), and at the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in New York (USA).
His research work focuses on cancer, studying factors that could be involved in its development, such as the transcription factor POU1F1 (or Pit-1), or in its treatment, such as stem cells and vitamin D and its analogues.
He has published more than 70 scientific papers in international journals and books and has supervised 11 doctoral theses.
He is currently Professor of Physiology at the University of Santiago de Compostela, and directs the "Oncological Endocrinology" laboratory at the Centre for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CIMUS) at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
