Dra. Marta Varela Rey started his research career in the group of Profs. María Iraburu Elizalde at University of Navarra as a PhD student. After a stay in the laboratory of Dr. Arthur Cederbaum in Mount Sinai (New York) and a postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Prof. Anne Warner at University College London (UK) (2004-2007), she joined the CIC bioGUNE as a Ciberehd fellow in the group of Profs. José María Mato and María Luz Martínez Chantar (2007-2020). She moved to CiMUS-USC in 2020. 

She is author of 53 articles in peer-reviewed journals and her work has received funding from the Instituto Carlos III (Ciberehd), Basque Department of Health, Fundación BBVA, and the Gilead Sciences International Research Scholars Program in Liver Disease.
